Hangouts was built on xmpp, and used to allow federation. Yes xmpp still exists but it’s functionally dead.

I believe google hangouts and xmpp would like to have a word with you. There was probably a universe where federated xmpp was as ubiquitous as sms, but in this universe, google federated, brought users over with cool features, and then defederated when they had all the users.

If you want another example from the same company in modern times, look at chrome and http/css/js. Google’s chokehold on the web ecosystem with chrome means that whatever they do, everyone else has to follow suit or not be compatible with the browser that something like ~75-90% of users use

I run some sdxl-based models at home and I’ve observed it can be difficult to avoid more often than you’d think. There are keywords in porn that blend the lines across datasets (“teen”, “petite”, “young”, “small” etc). The word “girl” in particular I’ve found that if you add that to basically any porn prompt gives you a small chance of inadvertently creating the undesirable. You have to be really careful and use words like “woman”, “adult”, etc instead to convince your image model not to make things that look like children. If you’ve ever wondered why internet-based porn generators are on super heavy guardrails, this is why.

That is only true when you use their “home” feature. It puts the entire thing behind oauth because it has to do so in order to restrict libraries/content to non-full users. Think about the instance where you have a thirteen-year-old kid and you want to restrict them to pg13 and under. Without forcing oauth on local connections they could just sign out and watch all your star trek porn parodies or whatever you don’t want them to see. If you remove the server from a “plex home”, it disables the oauth workflow for local connections as expected.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not really happy with a lot of their new sharing/social features, and their recommendations on the homepage can fuck right off, but I do think it’s important to be accurate when criticizing. Requiring oauth on local vlans when plex home is enabled is the objectively correct solution.

Bad DRM is like bad parents. When you want a new toy, and you’re 5 years old, you have to ask your parents to get it for you; you can’t just go get it yourself if you want to. Lets say you want a new bicycle. You ask your parents to get you a new bicycle, and they get one for you! But, they say that you’re only allowed to ride your bicycle between 10 and 11pm. They also tell you that you can’t ride your bicycle with 2 feet, or 2 hands, you have to use 1 foot and 1 hand. On weekdays, 10pm is past your bedtime so you really can’t ride it at all. On weekends, it’s dark out at 10pm most of the year so it’s really hard to see. The few times you do get to ride it, it’s really hard to ride because you can only hold on with 1 hand and pedal with 1 foot.

Even with good DRM (parents) that let you ride your bicycle during the daytime and with both your hands and feet, they are always the ones in control. They might tell you today that you can ride your bicycle anytime and anyway you want, but if you get a bad grade, or they are just in a bad mood (for the adults: profit motivated) they can at any time exercise the control they have and take your bike away, or tell you that the only way you can use it are ways you don’t want to use it.
