  • I think when all these famous studios were interesting, they still by inertia functioned the way people with actual skills founded them. I’m thinking of BioWare, Black Isle, Obsidian, but reading the history of any famous video game studio gives that impression. It was a rather personal business in 90s and early 00s, it seems.

Then the “professionals” came and started “fixing” everything, and something about today’s computing makes me personally deeply disgusted of anything advertised there.

I don’t want a shooter not better than a hundred Q3 clones, but taking 50GB disk space. I don’t even want it with “photorealistic” (no they aren’t) graphics. I don’t want CK3 because it’s slow and has too much bullshit happening, the secret of success is in quality of content more than amount, and more is not always better if a player gets bored with small events. I admit, I haven’t tried Hogwarts Legacy, put from what people say its open world is as useful as Daggerfall’s map the size of England, because most things on that map are all the same, though as a dungeon crawler Daggerfall is still better than typical modern game. And Star Wars - its Expanded Universe mostly came into existence in the 90s, it’s designed the way very convenient for all kinds of video games, or any entertainment and any secondary art at all, and George Lucas approached that theoretically before making the first movie (the “obscenely huge profits” part he may or may not have considered, but it came as a welcome bonus, I suppose), and still every modern time Star Wars game is just not interesting to me ; my favorite one is KotORII, so there is, of course, a gap between me and the majority, but it’s still baffling how didn’t they even try to make an X-Wing remake.

One can go on. People want to play interesting games. Very few people play games because of “more, better, wider” in ad. The whole idea of a game is to be interesting. It’s entertainment. It’s not “I’ve got a new iPhone and you don’t” dick size contest. Some game being very technically cool, but absolutely bullshit in gameplay, writing, UI design, character design, location design etc, - is not entertaining. Some other game being technically a visual novel (not necessarily), but with all those things done well, - it is entertaining.

So, making a good game doesn’t even require a lot of very competent and very stressed CS heroes working since dawn till dusk to the extent of their ability.

  • It’s a war situation, but - Russian tankers having mysterious problems spilling oil are destroying Black Sea ecosystems right now. Nobody even hears of that FFS.

That can be interpreted in favor of oil too. I’ll explain - what they cry about in media more is what the weaker side does bad, or the stronger side does good, and vice versa, and also lies on both. If the general publicity is in favor of oil, it means oil is objectively in such demand now that it gives power bigger than renewables, despite geopolitical access to natural resource not being required for renewables, despite renewables being autonomous and nicer, etc.

Until using renewables makes one more powerful than using oil, this won’t change. This requires not demanding more use of the or fighting use of fossil fuels, this requires technology improvements.

(I’ve got migraine now, sorry for using too many words)

  • If that happens, they are going to see a lot of things seemingly from the past connected to union activity though.

Not just strike breakers being hired (some of tech work is not that demanding in expertise, think typical Hindu web devs), but also actual spies, saboteurs, hitmen being involved, propaganda attacks, possibly legal attempts to bust unions and use of force. And, of course, crucial positions in union bureaucracy becoming attractive for organized crime (which likely has very few of people associated with it ever convicted, as in mostly invisible until it’s too late).

Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. Just the more adult level of the game. Considering that the tech industry is at the core of our civilization now, and considering its profits, this can get as historic as battle of the Blair mountain.

  • I regularly think and post conspiracy theory thoughts about why the “AI” is such a hype. And in line with them a certain kind of people seem to think that reality doesn’t matter, because those who control the present control the past and the future. That is, they think that controlling the discourse can replace controlling the reality. The issue with that is that whether a bomb is set, whether a boat is sea-worthy, whether a bridge will fall is not defined by discourse.

  • I’ve written something vague in another place in this thread which seemed a good enough argument. But I didn’t expect that someone is going to link a literal scientific publication in the same very direction. Thank you, sometimes arguing in the Web is not a waste of time.

EDIT: Have finished reading it. Started thinking it was the same argument, in the middle got confused, in the end realized that yes, it’s the same argument, but explained well by a smarter person. A very cool article, and fully understandable for a random Lemming at that.

  • If we remove the outside resistance, no, just as likely simply because of being of genocidal species.

If we don’t, then being genocided yourself and becoming treated specially because of that does, yes.

First, because of being treated specially. Second, because of those likely to commit genocide supporting you to minimize their PR expenses, and thus your friends and allies being genocidal.

Israel’s allies are like US and Germany, which, BTW, has made such notable apologetic actions and reparations only in case of the Holocaust, - they haven’t done anything except the official apology in case of Herero genocide, and their stance on the Armenian genocide was just recognizing it without criminalizing denial, and with very little attention to German Empire’s role in organizing it (basically German military advisors in the Ottoman Empire were involved in this as much as they were in actual warfare).

I don’t think I need to say anything about US, even the political status of Native Americans in the US could be something better.

But Israel is also friendly with Turkey - Israel has the PR advantage of being a genocide survivor nation, and Turkey has a resources and strategic position advantage of unpunished genocide perpetrator nation. One needs the resources help, another needs the PR help. They satisfy each other’s needs, and really a lot of basic goods in Israel are actually produced in Turkey. Even some military stuff.

Strangely enough it’s the same with Germany - they are clutching at every opportunity to publicly support Israel, and wave that support against anything bad they do. “We are friendlier with Israel than you” is their indulgence against anything.

This is, of course, solvable in the balancing way - Israel’s Holocaust PR should be universally shunned and condemned, their agent network investigated, exposed and controlled, and their military kicked out of Palestine, and Turkey should be kicked out with carpet bombings out of Western Armenia, Pontus, Assyria and Cilicia. It takes resources, like everything else. But the reward is huge for those of us not making money on suffering.

The problem is the psychopatic way geopolitics work currently. Peaceful West Asia, less corrupt\poor Latin America, less uneducated\poor sub-Saharan Africa could make our whole world far richer and pleasant to live in. But it would definitely change all the elites and ways of existence of currently powerful countries.

  • you can put out an idea in plain language, and get back code that just “does” it

No you can’t. Simplifying it grossly:

They can’t do the most low-level, dumbest detail, splitting hairs, “there’s no spoon”, “this is just correct no matter how much you blabber in the opposite direction, this is just wrong no matter how much you blabber to support it” kind of solutions.

And that happens to be main requirement that makes a task worth software developer’s time.

We need software developers to write computer programs, because “a general idea” even in a formalized language is not sufficient, you need to address details of actual reality. That is the bottleneck.

That technology widens the passage in the places which were not the bottleneck in the first place.
